23rd April 2012
Bill Waite, a retired Mathematics teacher and co-writer of Edexcel IGCSE Maths textbooks, came in to give a talk to our Year 11 students who are about to sit their IGCSE Maths exam. Bill spoke about how to gain crucial extra marks which I’m sure will be very worthwhile to the students.
Further to his talk on exams, Bill also spoke about his recent battle with Parkinson’s Disease and how he is about to embark on a golf tour of Canada and America to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s Disease UK. In one calendar month, Bill is booked to play 18 golf courses across the two countries and take part in various other charity events. If you would like to read more about this challenge or if you would like to donate to the charity then please click here.

Creative and Media Workshop
On March 14th a group of year 8 students went to Fantasy Island in Skegness to take part in a Creative and Media Workshop organised by Boston College. There were 4 workshops during the day, the first one being an Interactive Art session with a Graffiti artist. Students were shown how to create their own tag and how to use spray paints to decorate their work. Next they went to a session on photography and learnt how to take better photographs. After lunch the third activity involved a TV studio. They were able to take on the roles associated with producing a TV programme both in front and behind the camera, and in the Gallery. Our final activity involved a dance session with a world famous choreographer – Ashley Banjo’s very own dance teacher no less! A great time was had by all, with opportunity to learn more about possible future career choices and jobs in the Media. Pictures can be seen here.

Girls from 9J take to the stage with percussion duo Maraca2.
9Jade joined Percussion Duo Maraca2 in their concert at the South Holland Centre on 29th February in a show of percussive virtuosity. They had initially taken part in a workshop with the Duo a week or two earlier where they learnt their individual sections, following that up with more rehearsal sessions before coming together with other local schools in the evening to perform a massed Samba within the concert itself. Having learnt Samba earlier in the year they were able to extend their knowledge of this musical form, learning new ostinato patterns and rhythms and showing great musical discipline in providing a rock steady (if you’ll pardon the pun) beat to the whole piece. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to understand what it feels like to perform in such a large group with such professionals and all students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the concert that it was a part of. Picture can be seen on this Link.

East Midlands Floor and Vault Competition - Saturday 4th February 2012
Our teams had a great day at the East Midlands Floor and Vault Competition, which took place at Stamford on Saturday 4 February 2012 and the results are as follows: Under 13 girls came 1st winning the gold medal, with Laura Delve winning the silver medal in the individual competition. The team consisted of Elle Wenham, Megan Robinson Green, Cora-Lee Johnson, Tyler-Mae Harker, Amy Loveridge and Laura Delve. Under 19 girls also came 1st winning the gold medal, Sophie Crowson came 2nd winning the silver medal and Emma Coddington came 1st winning the gold medal in the individual competition. The team consisted of Ellie-Mae Stokes, Sammy-Jo Henshaw, Mandana Mir Javidi, Teghan-Kae Mills, Sophie Crowson and Emma Coddington. What is more remarkable is 3 of this team are only 13 years old, 1 is 14 years old and 2 are 15 years old. I would like to make a special mention to Emma who scored an amazing 9.9 on the vault, .1 short of a perfect 10. These results now mean that both of our teams are Regional Champions and therefore will represent the East Midlands at the Nationals held at Fenton Manor, Stoke on Trent in May. DISCOVERING MEDIEVAL
On Tuesday 17th January, year 7 students took a leap back in time when the re-enactment group ‘Happening History’ visited them. Students had the chance to find out what it was like to be a medieval knight, learning about the weapons used in battle and trying on the different types of armour. They also found out what it was like to visit a medieval surgeon, including discovering how soldiers would have been treated on the battlefield and what treatment you would have received at the barber surgeon. The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit, which brought their study of medieval history to life! Pictures are on our Photo Archive Page.

The 70th anniversary celebration for the Gleed Schools took place on Tuesday 1 November.
The celebrations included students taking part in activities from the decades during different lessons, such as learning the Twist in PE.
In the evening approximately 200 former pupils and staff, who had attended and taught at the school since it opened on 1941, joined the celebrations, catching up with old friends and sharing memories of their days at the school.
The food for the evening was prepared by cookery students - the boys providing the savoury dishes and the girls providing the sweet. A celebration cake was made by Mrs Rees - a photograph is attached of the 'cutting of the cake' with senior staff and Head students from both schools. Click here to see photograph.
The celebration was rounded off with a showcase of students' talents with gymnasts, singers, musicians, dancers and drama students all taking to the stage to perform, many on the theme of 'through the decades'.

Halloween competition Hairdressing
These students have completed a level 1 NVQ previously and since September have worked on developing their hairdressing skills. All enjoyed the creations and researched the theme prior to the competition.
Story boards were developed to enhance the design and showed planning and inspiration. All were winners, but gold, silver and bronze awards were given by the judges, who had a hard task of decision making, big thanks to Mrs. Shawhulme and Dr Manning. Halloween was chosen as a theme so the students could showcase their skills and talent learnt to date.

Canteen refurb
During the summer holidays the Canteen undertook a major refurbishment, so much so that the word ‘Canteen’ does not fit with the new dining experience!
New soft seating areas, new serveries, tables and chairs have given an atmosphere of eating in a high street restaurant.
A complete re-fit of the kitchen has enabled modern food choices to be offered daily - something that has delighted pupils and staff.

Gleed Girls’ Goes International!
We have been successful in gaining the prestigious International Schools’ Award from The British Council.
All the girls have assisted or participated in International House weeks and were able to take part in International competitions and even taste food from the different countries.
We have also recently established a link with a partner school in Nigeria, so girls will be able to find out more about this country and school and will have the opportunity to get Nigerian pen pals and learn a bit of Hausa (their main language)!
Different international weeks are taking place this year, so if you have ideas for activities, then please let us know!

Exam results
We have started the year on an academic high with the best examination results the college has ever achieved, both in the main school and the Post 16 Centre.
At the main school 51% of students at GCSE level achieved 5A*-C grades including English and Maths and over 50% of grades in the 6th form being at A or A*. Well done to all those students and the staff for all of their hard work.

These are exciting times for education in Spalding. For the first time ever, we now have a mainstream co-educational secondary school: Sir John Gleed School has been formed by bringing together the two successful Gleed schools which have both enjoyed a long and happy history in the town.

I am proud to be the headteacher of this new school as we move forward to provide outstanding educational opportunities for all young people of the area. We will build on the successes of both predecessor schools and together create a vibrant new learning environment.

Over the rest of this academic year we will work behind the scenes to make the changes happen, so that in September 2012 we will be working as one school with a unified staff and upgraded facilities. In the meantime, to ensure current students are able to learn uninterrupted by the changes, we will operate separate boys' and girls' campuses. This means that the day to day running of the school will remain unchanged. Therefore you will find that the rest of this website remains the same, so that you can continue to access information about the school in the usual way.

I look forward to keeping you updated with the exciting developments as the new school begins to take shape.

Mrs J Daniels
Headteacher
